Mission
Definition: As used herein, Mission refers to the intended outcome a Person, Household, Group, Committee, or Organization strives to achieve. Compare to Purpose. Introduction Several dictionary definitions of mission suggest a calling or a sending forth of someone to do something. As used herein, Mission has to do with Organizations and parts thereof such as divisions, departments, work-teams and so on and with Groups. To understand Mission well in the context of Organizations and Groups, several other Special Terms need to be kept in mind. Mission The outcome a Person, Household, Group or Organization strives to achieve. Narrative The Mission of ABC School is to alleviate ignorance among its students. Program A collection of Objects and Activities and/or Tasks – a process - that an Organization repeats indefinitely to achieve the outcome of its Mission. Narrative Betty Smith teaches 4th grade at ABC School. She strives to achieve the Mission of ABC School, which in her case, is to alleviate the relative ignorance of 3rd graders. To achieve her particular Mission, she conducts a Program consisting of a classroom with desks, chairs, books and a blackboard (Objects) with which she conducts the Activity of teaching, sometimes assigning Projects to the students. Project A sequence of Activities and/or Tasks that In contrast to a program, a project has a beginning, middle and end. A project could be, for example, to develop a new program or to improve an existing one. Once the project achieves its goal, it is over. Writing this textbook, for example, was a project. Activity Tasks Strategy Strategy is an answer to a question. It is a relative term. It has to do with your current position relative to everything else, especially relative to the accomplishment of your mission. The question is where is the more favorable position that will help you to accomplish the mission and how do you get there. The answer is a strategy. Tactic A tactic is a task you undertake once you are in the strategically favorable position. The execution of tactics produces the good of your mission.
